Can you write a resignation letter in Tagalog?

Yes. The Constitution makes Filipino and English the official languages of communication (Art. XIV, Sec. 7), so a resignation letter in Filipino is as valid as one in English. If your company handbook asks for a particular format, follow it or attach an English copy.

Write it the way you would speak to your manager: polite, short, and clear. Many people mix in English office terms such as final pay, turnover, or Certificate of Employment, and that is fine.

How much notice to give

If you resign without a just cause, the Labor Code asks you to serve written notice on your employer at least one month in advance (Art. 300, formerly Art. 285). An employer who receives no such notice may hold you liable for damages.

Your employer may agree to let you leave earlier. The third sample below asks for that politely while offering to serve the full month if the request is refused.

When you can resign immediately

The Labor Code lets an employee end the employment without notice only for these just causes:

  • Serious insult by the employer or its representative on your honor and person
  • Inhuman and unbearable treatment by the employer or its representative
  • A crime or offense committed by the employer or its representative against you or your immediate family
  • Other causes analogous to these

What to put in the letter

You do not have to give a reason when you resign with proper notice. If you give one, keep it short. Include these parts:

  • The date (petsa)
  • The name and position of the person you are writing to
  • A clear statement that you are resigning (nagbibitiw) and from which position
  • Your last working day (huling araw ng trabaho)
  • An offer to hand over your work, and a short thank-you if you wish
  • Your signature and printed name

After you resign

Keep a copy of the letter that shows when your employer received it, such as a receiving stamp, a signed copy, or the email you sent.

Under DOLE Labor Advisory No. 06-20, your final pay should be released within 30 days from the date of separation unless a company policy or agreement is more favorable, and your certificate of employment within three days from your request. Our final pay guide explains what is included.

Common questions

Can I write my resignation letter in Tagalog?
Yes. Filipino and English are both official languages, so a letter in Filipino is fine unless your employer's rules ask for a particular format. Keep a copy that shows when it was received.
How many days' notice do I need to give?
If you resign without a just cause, give written notice at least one month in advance (Labor Code Art. 300, formerly Art. 285). Your employer may agree to a shorter period.
Can I resign immediately without notice?
Only for the just causes the Labor Code lists: serious insult, inhuman and unbearable treatment, or a crime or offense against you or your immediate family by the employer or its representative, or analogous causes.
Do I need to give a reason in my resignation letter?
No. The Labor Code only requires written notice when you resign without a just cause. If you give a reason, keep it short and polite.
When will I get my final pay?
DOLE Labor Advisory No. 06-20 says final pay should be released within 30 days from separation, unless a company policy or agreement is more favorable.
